Viognier
Viognier
Viognier is a distinctive aromatic white grape most closely associated with the northern Rhône, particularly Condrieu and Château-Grillet, though it is now cultivated in many warm regions around the world. The vine is moderately vigorous with small to medium berries and tends to form compact clusters. It thrives in warm, sunny sites with good air movement and is sensitive to both under-ripeness (which suppresses aroma) and over-ripeness (which diminishes acidity). Viognier performs best in well-drained granitic, schist, or limestone-based soils that help retain freshness in warm climates.
The wines are richly aromatic and typically low to medium in acidity, showing expressive notes of apricot, peach, white flowers, honeysuckle, citrus blossom, and subtle spice. Texture ranges from silky to full-bodied, with some versions incorporating barrel fermentation or lees work for added weight and complexity. When well balanced, Viognier offers an opulent yet vibrant profile that pairs well with aromatic, spice-driven dishes and has become a signature variety for producers seeking expressive, floral white wines with distinctive richness.
