Pinot Gris
Pinot Gris
Pinot Gris is a pink-skinned mutation of Pinot Noir, cultivated widely across cool to moderate climates and most famously associated with Alsace, northern Italy (as Pinot Grigio), and Oregon. The vine shows moderate vigor, producing small to medium-sized berries and compact clusters that can be susceptible to botrytis and require attentive canopy management. It performs best in well-drained, moderately calcareous or volcanic soils and benefits from sites with good sun exposure and long, even ripening seasons, which help the grape develop its characteristic aromatic richness and balanced acidity.
Pinot Gris wines vary by region and picking decisions but often display medium to high aroma intensity, with notes of pear, apple, stone fruit, citrus, spice, and occasionally honey or smoke. Styles range from crisp, light-bodied expressions with elevated acidity—as seen in many Italian bottlings—to fuller, more textural versions from Alsace and Oregon, where the grape can also yield off-dry or late-harvest wines. Its versatility allows for both fresh, approachable profiles and richer, more structured wines with notable depth and aging potential.
