Riesling
Riesling
Riesling is a highly aromatic, late-budding white grape native to the Rhine River valley and now cultivated in cool to moderate climates worldwide, including Germany, Alsace, Austria, and parts of Australia and North America. The vine has low to moderate vigor, producing small berries and compact clusters that are naturally resistant to cold but susceptible to botrytis—an attribute that can be either a challenge or an asset, depending on the intended style. Riesling thrives in well-drained, stony soils such as slate, schist, or limestone, and performs best in sunny, well-exposed sites that allow slow, even ripening while preserving its hallmark acidity.
Riesling wines are known for their high acidity and expressive aromatics, with notes ranging from citrus, green apple, and stone fruit to floral, mineral, and occasionally petrol-like nuances with age. Its versatility supports a vast spectrum of styles—from bone-dry, steely, mineral-driven wines to lusciously sweet, botrytized or late-harvest bottlings—each showcasing great precision and longevity. Riesling’s transparency to terroir and capacity to age gracefully make it one of the most characterful and respected white varieties in the world.
