Petite Sirah (Durif)
Petite Sirah (Durif)
Petite Sirah, also known as Durif, is a robust red grape most closely associated with California, though it originated in France as a natural crossing of Syrah and Peloursin. It is a low- to moderate-vigour vine that produces small, thick-skinned berries in compact clusters, resulting in deeply colored wines with significant tannin. The variety thrives in warm, dry climates and well-drained soils—particularly gravelly or sandy sites—where it ripens reliably and develops concentrated flavors while maintaining moderate acidity. Petite Sirah wines are typically inky purple to nearly opaque, with firm tannins, bold structure, and flavors of dark berries, plum, pepper, and cocoa. Styles range from powerful, age-worthy bottlings to more polished, fruit-driven expressions that retain the grape’s hallmark depth and intensity.
