Mourvedre
Mourvedre
Mourvèdre is a classic Mediterranean red grape closely associated with Bandol in southern France and widely grown in Spain, where it is known as Monastrell. It is a late-ripening, sun-loving variety that produces small, thick-skinned berries in compact clusters, requiring warm, dry conditions and abundant light to achieve full phenolic maturity. The vine thrives in well-drained, rocky or calcareous soils—particularly those with heat-retentive stones—and can be sensitive to cool climates or excessive moisture. Mourvèdre wines are typically deep ruby to purple, with firm tannins, moderate acidity, and intense flavors of dark berries, earth, herbs, and gamey or savory notes. Styles range from structured, age-worthy bottlings to more approachable blends where Mourvèdre adds depth, color, and aromatic complexity.
