Grenache Noir
Grenache Noir
Grenache Noir is a classic Mediterranean red grape, most closely associated with southern France and Spain, where it thrives in warm, dry, sun-drenched climates. It is a vigorous, drought-tolerant vine that produces large, loose clusters of thin-skinned berries, ripening late and accumulating high sugar levels while maintaining moderate acidity. The variety prefers well-drained, rocky sites—particularly schist, limestone, and decomposed granite—and performs best where heat and wind help concentrate flavors. Grenache Noir wines are typically pale to medium ruby in color, with soft to moderate tannins, elevated alcohol potential, and expressive notes of red berries, spice, herbs, and garrigue. Styles range from bright, juicy, and approachable to more structured, old-vine bottlings with depth, warmth, and savory complexity.
