Grenache Noir Grapevine | Grow, Care & Planting Guide

Grenache Noir is a widely planted red grape variety known for producing ripe, fruit-forward wines with elevated alcohol and soft tannins. It is a key component in many southern Rhône blends and is also bottled as a single-varietal wine in Spain, France, and other warm-climate regions. The variety is valued for its adaptability, heat tolerance, and ability to produce generous, expressive wines.

Preferred Climate

Grenache Noir performs best in a warm, dry Mediterranean climate with abundant sunlight and long growing seasons. It is highly drought-tolerant and thrives in hot, arid conditions, particularly in well-drained, rocky soils.

Growth Characteristics

Grenache Noir produces medium to large clusters of medium-sized, thin-skinned berries. The vine is well adapted to dry, windy environments and poor, stony soils, where it can produce concentrated fruit. Its relatively thin skins result in moderate color extraction and soft tannin structure. The variety buds early and ripens late, requiring a long, warm growing season to achieve full maturity. While drought-resistant, it can be susceptible to coulure and wind damage during flowering. Proper yield control enhances concentration and balance.

How to Plant & Care for Grenache Noir Grapevines

  • Pre-irrigate soil 24 hours before planting
  • Acclimate the grapevine to site temperature before planting
  • Remove any plastic pot before planting a green potted grapevine
  • Plant the vine so the graft union is ~6 inches above the soil line
  • Install a plant protector over the vine

Wine Profile

Grenache Noir wines are typically medium to full-bodied with moderate tannins, moderate acidity, and elevated alcohol. Aromatically, they display ripe red fruit such as strawberry, raspberry, and red cherry, often accompanied by hints of white pepper, dried herbs, and spice. In warmer sites, darker fruit notes such as plum and blackberry may emerge. On the palate, the wines are round and generous, with supple texture and a fruit-driven core. With age or oak influence, Grenache can develop notes of leather, tobacco, and earthy complexity while retaining its characteristic warmth and richness.
