Carignane

Carignane is a historic Mediterranean red grape, long associated with southern France and Spain, and increasingly valued in California for its old-vine plantings. It is a vigorous, high-yielding variety that forms large, tightly packed clusters of thick-skinned berries, typically requiring warm, dry conditions to achieve full ripeness. The vine prefers well-drained, sun-exposed sites and can struggle in cooler or wetter climates where acidity remains high and tannins firm. Carignane wines are usually deep ruby to purple in color, with naturally elevated acidity and robust tannins, showing flavors of dark berries, spice, and savory herbal notes.
