Zinfandel
Zinfandel
Zinfandel is a vigorous, early-to-mid-ripening black grape most famously associated with California, though genetically identical to Croatia’s Crljenak Kaštelanski/Primitivo. The vine produces medium-sized berries in moderately compact clusters and is known for its uneven ripening, where berries at different maturity levels often appear within the same bunch. It thrives in warm, dry climates with abundant sunshine and performs especially well in well-drained, rocky, or decomposed granite soils that help control vigor. Old, dry-farmed bush vines are common and valued for producing smaller yields with greater concentration and balance.
The wines are bold and expressive, generally showing medium to high acidity and pronounced fruit richness. Typical flavors include ripe blackberry, raspberry, boysenberry, plum, and black cherry alongside notes of pepper, baking spice, dried herbs, and occasionally a brambly or jammy edge when very ripe. Styles range from fresh, vibrant, red-fruited examples to fuller-bodied, high-alcohol versions aged in oak for added spice and sweetness of texture. Zinfandel’s combination of power, fruit intensity, and approachability has made it one of California’s most emblematic and beloved red varieties.
