Vermentino
Vermentino
Vermentino is a Mediterranean white grape widely cultivated along the coastal zones of Italy (especially Sardinia, Liguria, and Tuscany), as well as Corsica and southern France, where it is known as Rolle. The vine shows moderate to high vigor, producing medium-sized berries in loose to moderately compact clusters, and thrives in warm, sun-drenched, wind-exposed sites typical of maritime climates. It performs best in well-drained, often sandy, granitic, or limestone-rich soils that emphasize freshness and aromatic lift. Thanks to its natural drought tolerance and affinity for coastal breezes, Vermentino maintains acidity and aromatic clarity even in hot, dry conditions.
Vermentino wines are typically bright and expressive, with medium to high acidity and a distinctive combination of citrus, green apple, pear, white peach, Mediterranean herbs, and subtle saline or mineral notes. Styles range from crisp, zesty, stainless-steel-fermented versions to more textural, lees-enriched bottlings that show added depth and complexity. Its freshness, versatility, and affinity for seafood-rich cuisines have made Vermentino one of the most characterful and increasingly popular white varieties of the Mediterranean basin.
