Teroldego

Teroldego

Teroldego is an ancient, dark-skinned red grape native to Trentino in northern Italy, where it is most famously cultivated in the Rotaliano plain. The vine shows moderate to high vigor, producing medium-sized, thick-skinned berries in compact clusters, and responds well to the region’s pergola and trellis systems that help manage its vegetative growth. It thrives in well-drained alluvial soils—especially the gravelly, sandy, and limestone-influenced deposits of the Piana Rotaliana—which offer excellent drainage and heat retention. Teroldego benefits from the area’s strong diurnal shifts and alpine breezes that promote even ripening and preserve acidity.

Teroldego wines are typically deeply colored and vibrant, with medium to high acidity and supple, moderately firm tannins. Aromas often include black cherry, blackberry, plum, violet, and subtle herbal or mineral notes, sometimes with a faintly spicy or graphite-like edge. While traditionally crafted in fresh, fruit-forward styles with youthful energy, Teroldego can also produce more structured, age-worthy wines when yields are reduced and oak is used judiciously. Its combination of brightness, purity, and regional distinctiveness has earned Teroldego a growing reputation beyond its Alpine home.
