Merlot

Merlot is a classic red grape originating in Bordeaux, where it plays a central role in both varietal wines and blends, and is now cultivated widely in moderate to warm climates around the world. It is a moderately vigorous, relatively early-ripening variety that produces medium-sized, thin-skinned berries in loose to moderately compact clusters, allowing it to achieve full maturity even in cooler or variable seasons. The vine thrives in well-drained clay, limestone, and gravel soils, which help balance its natural softness with structure. Merlot wines are typically medium to deep ruby in color, with moderate acidity, supple tannins, and flavors of plum, red and black berries, herbs, and gentle spice. Styles range from plush, approachable expressions to more structured, age-worthy bottlings shaped by site and careful winemaking.
