Malbec

Malbec is a classic red grape originating in southwest France, where it was traditionally used in blends, and now most famously associated with the high-altitude vineyards of Argentina. It is a moderately vigorous, mid- to late-ripening variety that forms small, thick-skinned berries in compact clusters, requiring warm, dry conditions and ample sunlight to fully mature. The vine performs best in well-drained, rocky or alluvial soils—particularly at elevation—where cool nights help preserve acidity and refine tannin structure. Malbec wines are typically deep purple to nearly opaque, with moderate acidity, supple to firm tannins, and flavors of dark fruit, violets, spice, and cocoa. Styles range from plush, approachable expressions to more structured, terroir-driven bottlings with notable depth and aging potential.
