French Olive Oil Orchard Kit
Inspired by the historic olive-growing regions of southern France, this orchard kit brings together three distinctive olive varieties selected to create a diverse and productive French-inspired planting: Picholine, Columella, and Aglandau.
Each variety contributes something distinct to the orchard. Picholine is one of France’s best-known olives, valued for its versatility, vigorous growth, and flavorful oil. Aglandau is a celebrated Provençal oil variety prized for producing aromatic, complex olive oil with distinctive character. Columella complements the orchard with strong production and valuable pollination potential, helping encourage successful fruit set among the trees.
Planting multiple compatible olive varieties creates a more complete and productive backyard orchard than relying on a single variety alone. Their overlapping flowering periods encourage cross-pollination, while differences in growth habit, fruit characteristics, and oil qualities give each tree its own role within the orchard. Together, these three varieties reflect the diversity and tradition of olive cultivation found across southern France.
For the home grower, that means an orchard designed not only around the character of French olive growing, but around how olive trees perform together. As the trees mature, each contributes to the beauty and productivity of the planting while producing olives that can be harvested and blended into a distinctive homegrown oil.
Whether your goal is to press your own olive oil, harvest olives from your backyard, or simply create a beautiful Mediterranean-inspired landscape, the French Olive Oil Orchard Kit offers an authentic starting point for establishing an olive orchard with a sense of place, tradition, and purpose.
♧ Planting Your Olive Trees Simple guidance for a strong first growing season. ⌄
Planting Your Olive Trees
Choose a location with plenty of direct sunlight and well-draining soil. Space your olive trees far enough apart to allow each tree room to develop a healthy canopy as it matures.
Plant each tree at approximately the same soil depth at which it was growing in its container. Avoid planting too deeply or burying the base of the trunk. Gently firm the soil around the root ball and water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil around the roots.
If your kit includes plant protectors, place the protector around the young trunk and secure it to the stake. The protector can be adjusted or removed as the tree becomes established and develops.
Watering
Newly planted olive trees need consistent moisture while their root systems become established. Water deeply after planting and continue to monitor soil moisture throughout the first growing season. Allow the soil to begin drying between waterings rather than keeping it constantly wet. Olive trees are drought tolerant once established, but young trees still require regular watering while developing their root systems.
Always adjust your watering schedule for your climate, soil type, rainfall, drainage, and local conditions.
Fertilizer
Your orchard kit includes slow-release fertilizer selected to support establishment. Apply the included fertilizer according to its instructions and avoid adding excessive additional fertilizer.
Young olive trees benefit from steady, balanced growth while establishing their root systems. Proper watering, sunlight, and nutrition during the first growing season will help provide the foundation for healthy long-term growth and future fruit production.
▣ Shipping & Delivery When your trees ship and what to expect on arrival. ⌄
Seasonal Shipping
Olive trees are living plants, and we recommend scheduling your trees to ship during periods of suitable planting weather in your area. Your orchard may be reserved in advance at no extra charge and scheduled to ship at a time that suits you and your trees best.
You can choose your ship date on the add to cart page. Weather, extreme temperatures, and other conditions affecting live plants can occasionally require adjustments to the shipping schedule.
Carefully Packed for the Journey
Your orchard collection is carefully prepared and packaged to help protect the olive trees and included establishment materials during transit. Once your order leaves the nursery, tracking information will be provided so you can follow its journey.
When Your Orchard Arrives
Open your package promptly after delivery and inspect your olive trees. Remove the trees from their shipping packaging and follow the planting and care instructions provided with your order.
If you cannot plant immediately, keep your olive trees protected from extreme temperatures and make sure their root systems remain properly hydrated until planting. Avoid allowing the trees to sit in hot, enclosed packaging after delivery.
Your olive trees may experience some temporary stress during shipping. Minor leaf drop or changes in appearance can occur as the trees adjust to transportation and their new environment. With proper planting, watering, and care, they can begin establishing themselves in their new orchard.
? Frequently Asked Questions Answers to common olive orchard kit questions. ⌄
Can these olive varieties be planted together?
- Yes. The varieties in each orchard collection are intentionally selected to grow together as part of a mixed backyard olive orchard. Growing multiple varieties can also provide opportunities for cross-pollination, which may improve fruit set and overall productivity.
- Each variety retains its own growth, fruit, and oil characteristics while contributing something different to the orchard as a whole.
Do olive trees need another variety for pollination?
- Many olive varieties are capable of producing fruit on their own, but fruit set can often benefit from having another compatible variety flowering nearby.
- Each orchard kit includes multiple olive varieties, creating a diverse planting with overlapping bloom periods and opportunities for cross-pollination.
How much space do I need for my orchard?
- The amount of space required depends on the varieties, your desired tree size, and how you plan to prune and maintain them. Backyard olive orchards can be adapted to many different spaces, from a few trees incorporated into the landscape to a more traditional orchard layout.
- Before planting, consider the mature size of the trees and leave enough room for sunlight, airflow, pruning, harvesting, and access between trees.
When will my olive trees produce olives?
- Young olive trees need time to establish before producing significant crops. Trees may begin producing small amounts of fruit within their first few growing seasons, with production generally increasing as the trees mature.
- During the early establishment years, developing a healthy root system and strong tree structure is more important than maximizing fruit production.
Can I make olive oil from these trees?
- Yes. The varieties included in our Olive Oil Orchard Kits are selected for their suitability for oil production. Once your trees mature and begin producing sufficient fruit, the olives can be harvested and pressed individually or combined to create your own blend.
- The amount of oil produced will depend on the varieties, harvest size, fruit maturity, growing conditions, and extraction method.
What's the difference between the Classic and Reserve Editions?
- Both editions provide the olive trees and core establishment essentials needed to begin your orchard.
- The Classic Edition includes plant protection and one-year slow-release fertilizer for first-year establishment.
- The Reserve Edition is designed as our most complete orchard establishment experience, with plant protection, three-year slow-release fertilizer, root enhancer, and a personalized aluminum orchard plaque.
Can I create an orchard with more than nine trees?
- Yes. If you are planning a larger planting, select the "Custom Orchard Size" option. Custom orchards can be configured for larger spaces and give you greater flexibility in building an orchard that fits your property.
Can I grow olive trees outside of a traditional olive-growing region?
- Olive trees can be grown successfully in many areas, but winter temperatures, summer heat, humidity, rainfall, soil drainage, and local growing conditions can all affect their performance.
- Because cold tolerance and other characteristics vary by variety, your local climate should always be considered when establishing an olive orchard.
Do I need experience growing olive trees?
- No. These collections are designed to make starting a small olive orchard more approachable. Olive trees require watering and care while becoming established, followed by periodic pruning and maintenance as they mature, but you do not need an existing orchard or professional growing experience to get started.
