Counoise

Counoise is a traditional Rhône red grape, best known as a blending component in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and grown increasingly in select warm-climate regions such as California. It is a moderately vigorous, relatively late-ripening variety that produces large, loosely clustered bunches of thin-skinned berries, helping it resist rot and maintain freshness in warm, dry conditions. The vine prefers well-drained, sunlit sites and tends to offer moderate yields with naturally bright acidity and modest tannins. Counoise wines are typically pale to medium ruby in color, with lifted aromas of red berries, herbs, and spice, contributing vibrancy and aromatic complexity. Styles range from light, lively varietal bottlings to expressive blends where Counoise adds freshness, finesse, and aromatic lift.
