Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is a highly versatile white grape most closely associated with France’s Loire Valley, though it is also widely planted in South Africa and other warm, balanced climates. It is a naturally vigorous, high-yielding vine that forms medium-sized, moderately compact clusters of thin-skinned berries, ripening slowly and retaining pronounced acidity even in warm conditions. The variety thrives in well-drained soils—particularly limestone and schist—and responds sensitively to site, allowing for a wide stylistic range. Chenin Blanc wines are typically pale straw to light gold, marked by vibrant acidity and flavors that span from citrus and orchard fruit to honeyed and mineral notes. Styles vary widely, from crisp and dry to off-dry, sparkling, and richly sweet, with many examples offering impressive longevity.
