About This Vineyard Kit

Bordeaux Rouge Vineyard Kit

Inspired by the legendary red wine vineyards of Bordeaux,
this vineyard kit brings together three of the region’s most celebrated grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Each variety contributes something distinct to the vineyard.
Cabernet Sauvignon is prized for its structure, depth, and longevity. Merlot brings richness and a softer, rounder character, while Cabernet Franc adds aromatic complexity and finesse. Together, they form the foundation of many of Bordeaux’s most renowned red wines.

For the backyard grower, planting these varieties together
creates something more interesting than a vineyard of a single grape. Each vine develops its own character through the growing season, while the vineyard as a whole reflects the tradition and diversity of a classic Bordeaux vineyard.

Whether your goal is to make wine, grow your own grapes, or
simply create a beautiful vineyard at home, the Bordeaux Rouge Vineyard Kit offers an authentic starting point for establishing a vineyard with a sense of place, history, and purpose.

Planting Your Grapevines Simple guidance for a strong first growing season.
Planting Your Grapevines

Planting Your Vines

Choose a location with plenty of direct sunlight. Space your vines according to the training system and layout you plan to use, allowing enough room for each vine to develop a healthy
canopy as it matures.

Plant each vine at approximately the same soil depth at which it was previously growing. Avoid planting too deeply, and gently firm the soil around the roots before watering thoroughly.

Slide the plant protector included in your kit over the vine, secure to the stake and fold the top close. They can be opened later in the season.

Watering

Newly planted grapevines need consistent moisture while their root systems become established. Water deeply after planting and continue to monitor soil moisture throughout the first growing season. The goal is deep, even watering rather than constantly wet soil. Always adjust for your climate, soil type, rainfall, and local conditions.

Fertilizer

Your vineyard kit includes slow-release fertilizer selected to support establishment. Apply the included fertilizer according to its instructions and avoid adding excessive additional fertilizer. Young grapevines benefit more from balanced, steady growth than from being pushed into overly vigorous growth.

Step by Step Planting Guide➔

First-year priority: Focus on establishing strong roots and a healthy trunk. Your vineyard does not need to look like a mature producing vineyard during its first season.
Seasonal Shipping & Delivery When your vines ship and what to expect on arrival.
Seasonal Shipping & Delivery

Seasonal Shipping

Grapevines are living plants, and we recommend scheduling your grapevines to ship between March and August for most states. Your vineyard may be reserved in advance at no extra charge and scheduled to ship at for a time that suits you and your vines best.

You can choose your ship date on the add to cart page. Weather and other conditions affecting live plants can occasionally require adjustments to the shipping schedule.

Carefully Packed for the Journey

Your vineyard collection is carefully prepared and packaged to help protect the vines and included establishment materials during transit. Once your order leaves the nursery, tracking information will be provided so you can follow its journey.

When Your Vineyard Arrives

Open your package promptly after delivery and inspect your vines. Remove the plants from their shipping packaging and follow the appropriate planting and care instructions for the type of vines you received.

If you cannot plant immediately, keep your vines protected from extreme temperatures and follow the temporary care instructions provided with your order until planting.

Remember that dormant grapevines can look very different from actively growing potted vines. A dormant vine without leaves is not necessarily unhealthy—it may simply be waiting for the conditions that signal the beginning of spring growth.

Because these are living plants, shipping dates may occasionally shift in response to weather or plant readiness. We would rather ship your vineyard at the right time than rush living vines out the door.
Frequently Asked Questions Answers to common vineyard kit questions.

Can these grape varieties be planted together?

  • Yes. The varieties in this collection were intentionally selected to grow together as part of a mixed backyard vineyard. Each variety retains its own characteristics while contributing to the overall character of the collection.

How much space do I need for my vineyard?

  • The amount of space required depends on vine spacing, row spacing, and the training system you choose. Backyard vineyards can be adapted to many different spaces, from a single row of vines to a more traditional multi-row layout.
  • Before planting, consider the mature size of the vines and leave enough room for sunlight, airflow, pruning, and access between plants.

Do I need a trellis?

  • Grapevines are climbing plants and benefit from a permanent support and training system. A simple post-and-wire trellis is suitable for many backyard vineyards, although the best system depends on your site, variety, and desired vineyard layout.

When will my vines produce grapes?

  • Young grapevines need time to establish before carrying a full crop. Some vines may begin producing a small amount of fruit within their first few growing seasons, with production increasing as the vineyard matures.
  • During the earliest stages of establishment, developing a strong root system and permanent vine structure is generally more important than maximizing fruit production.

What's the difference between the Classic and Reserve
Editions?

  • Both editions provide the vines and core establishment essentials needed to begin your vineyard.
  • The Classic Edition includes plant protection and one-year slow-release fertilizer for first-year establishment.
  • The Reserve Edition is designed as our most complete vineyard establishment experience, with plant protection, three-year slow-release fertilizer, root enhancer, and a personalized aluminum vineyard plaque.

Can I create a vineyard with more than nine vines?

  • Yes. If you are planning a larger planting, select the Custom Vineyard Size option. Custom vineyards can be configured for larger spaces and give you greater flexibility in building the vineyard that fits your property.

Can I grow these vines outside of a traditional wine
region?

  • Yes. Grapevines are grown successfully in many different climates, but variety selection, winter temperatures, summer heat, humidity, soil conditions, and disease pressure can all affect performance. Your local growing conditions should always be considered when establishing a vineyard.

Do I need experience growing grapevines?

  • No. These collections are designed to make starting a small vineyard more approachable. Grapevines do require seasonal care and pruning as they mature, but you do not need an existing vineyard or professional growing experience to get started.
