Souzão Grapevine | Grow, Care & Planting Guide

Souzão is a dark-skinned red grape variety known for its exceptionally deep color, high natural acidity, and firm structure. Preferred Climate

Souzão performs best in a warm continental climate with hot summers and well-drained, low-fertility soils. It tolerates heat well and benefits from dry conditions that reduce disease pressure while allowing full phenolic development.

Growth Characteristics

Souzão produces medium-sized clusters with small, thick-skinned berries that yield intensely pigmented juice. The vine exhibits moderate vigor and productivity, performing best in well-drained soils with careful canopy management to balance vegetative growth and fruit exposure. It is relatively well adapted to heat and drought conditions but requires good site selection to achieve balanced ripeness without excessive tannin.

How to Plant & Care for Souzão Grapevines

  • Pre-irrigate soil 24 hours before planting
  • Acclimate the grapevine to site temperature before planting
  • Remove any plastic pot before planting a green potted grapevine
  • Plant the vine so the graft union is ~6 inches above the soil line
  • Install a plant protector over the vine
  • Irrigate based on soil type and site conditions

Wine Profile

Souzão wines are typically full-bodied with high acidity and firm tannins. Aromatically, they display blackberry, black cherry, plum, and dark floral notes, often accompanied by earthy and mineral undertones. On the palate, the wines are deeply colored and structured, with a vibrant acid backbone that provides freshness and aging potential. With maturation, they can develop savory, spicy, and complex secondary characteristics while maintaining their core intensity.
