Cinsaut Grapevine | Grow, Care & Planting Guide

Cinsaut is a heat-tolerant red grape variety traditionally used in blends to soften more tannic varieties such as Grenache and Carignan. In recent years, it has gained recognition for producing elegant, aromatic single-varietal wines with freshness and finesse. The variety is valued for its ability to retain acidity in warm climates and for its adaptability in both red and rosé production.

Preferred Climate

Cinsaut performs best in a warm Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and abundant sunlight. It is drought-tolerant and well suited to arid conditions but benefits from well-drained soils to maintain balance and fruit concentration.

Growth Characteristics

Cinsaut produces large, loosely packed clusters with relatively large, thin-skinned berries. The vine exhibits high vigor and naturally high yield potential, requiring careful pruning and crop control to ensure quality and concentration. It is well adapted to dry, hot climates and shows good drought resistance. However, its thin skins can make it susceptible to rot in humid conditions. Proper canopy management and site selection are important to achieve balanced ripening and preserve aromatic intensity.

How to Plant & Care for Cinsaut Grapevines

  • Pre-irrigate soil 24 hours before planting
  • Acclimate the grapevine to site temperature before planting
  • Remove any plastic pot before planting a green potted grapevine
  • Plant the vine so the graft union is ~6 inches above the soil line
  • Install a plant protector over the vine
  • Irrigate based on soil type and site conditions

Wine Profile

Cinsaut wines are typically medium-bodied with moderate tannins and bright acidity. Aromatically, they express red fruit such as strawberry, raspberry, and red cherry, often accompanied by subtle floral notes and hints of spice. On the palate, they are fresh and supple, with soft structure and a smooth, approachable finish. In rosé production, Cinsaut contributes vibrant fruit character, delicacy, and refreshing acidity, making it particularly well suited to lighter, fruit-forward styles.

Clones
